This mural was one of many I created for the Virgin Megastores, circa 1995-1999. I painted with oils on the wall of the Chicago Virgin Megastore, their flagship store on Michigan Ave. The scene is a copy of Michelangelo’s Creation of the Sun and Moon panel in the Sistine Chapel, and I painted it in the Classical Music Department.

The scene depicts God the Father as he creates the Moon; under his arms and within his garments are putti that represent the planets that are yet to be created. After he finishes making the Moon, he now flies off to create more of the universe. The depiction of God the Father flying off, with his back towards the viewer, was controversial at the time of the Renaissance, because it was a sign of disrespect to depict God from behind. He is thought to be so holy, that you only saw his face and frontal aspect.
