The Scourging of Christ is inspired by the 12th century Anglo-Saxon book: the St. Albans Psalter. In this representation, we can easily identify the figure of Jesus, because he not only is larger (indicating importance) but the color Blue surrounds him. The color Blue is associated with heavenly beings and places. Yet, we also know that though the color Blue is prominent, this scene of Jesus’s scourging is taking place firmly in the Earthly Realm, because the green of Malachite stone crushed and ground fences in and around the image. The colors green and brown are associated with the Earthly Realm. The Hand of God pierces this Earthly Realm, showing the God the Father is intimately drawn to Jesus and his sufferings. Heaven is often depicted as a colorful rainbow cloud, as is portrayed here.

I have followed an ancient recipe for Egg Tempera, which is the only traditional pigment that is suitable for animal skin parchments. This parchment is a brown-dyed Turkish goatskin and is “illuminated” by 24k double gold leaf.

The artwork is mounted on medium brown acid-free paper. A cream-colored mat board encloses the piece, with interior measurements of 13.5” x 10.5”, and exterior measurements of 20” x 16”.

A clear protective plastic sleeve covers the art.

My own personal wax seal is affixed to each ILLUMINATION.
