Jesus Carries His Cross is another in my series of Medieval-style images called ILLUMINATION. Jesus is larger than the other figures, showing his importance in the theological hierarchy of the Dark and Middle Ages. A Blue color ensconces him, further informing of his importance: Blue is a color used extensively to symbolize Heavenly people and things. He walks outside the city gates, and Simon the Cyrene is behind him, trying to help. Because the color Green (here, genuine Malachite) surrounds the scene, we know that the activity is depicted is happening here in the Earthly Realm. I have used an original Medieval recipe for egg tempera, with pigments mined from around the world. The image is painted on brown-dyed Turkish goatskin and I have applied 24k double gold leaf as “illumination”. Parts of the artwork are painted with 23k shell gold.
The artwork is mounted on brown acid-free paper. A cream-colored mat board encloses the piece, with interior measurements of 13.5” x 10.5”, and exterior measurements of 20” x 16”.
A clear protective plastic sleeve covers the art.
My own personal wax seal is affixed to each ILLUMINATION.
